TOP 5 ATP Forehands - What do the best forehands have in common?

As of November, 6th 2022 Rafael Nadal and Carlos Alcaraz (pictured below), have the best forehands on the ATP tour.

For the purpose of this post, let's focus on the striking mechanics.

Notice that Nadal and Alcaraz have distinctly different preparation sizes, yet both have nearly identical striking angles. They both meet the ball with a fully extended arm, allowing for maximum racket acceleration. When coupled with applied body force (legs, hips, core and shoulders), this helps create two of the most dangerous forehands ever.

In the image below, I've put together the Top 5 forehands (technically) on the ATP tour. This picture is truly compelling. Now we can see side by side that all the best forehands have nearly identical striking angles, yet they vary in preparation angle and style.

The effects of a compact versus larger preparation can definitely be debated, however, let's leave that for another time.
